All you need to know about caffeine
Caffeine is a bitter substance that occurs naturally in plants. Caffeine can be found in more than 60 plants, including coffee beans, cacao pods, tea leaves and kola nuts.
In the recent years, there has been a production of synthetic (man-made) caffeine which is being added to some medicines, foods and drinks. Some medicines for pain relief and cold contain synthetic caffeine, and so do energy drinks. Energy boosting gums and snacks also contain synthetic caffeine.
Caffeine can have many effects on the body either in a positive or negative way. Caffeine can stimulate the central nervous system, it provides the body with energy and can help your body get rid of extra salt and water by urinating more.
Caffeine can also increase your blood pressure and can as well increase the release of acid in your stomach which can in turn cause stomach upset or heartburn, and caffeine can equally interfere with the absorption of calcium in the body.
Most individuals do not find it harmful to consume up to 400mg of caffeine a day while some tend to be more sensitive to its effects. If you eat or drink much of caffeine, it can cause health problems like Insomnia, Headache, Abnormal heart rhythm, Anxiety, Dizziness or Dehydration.
Energy drinks are beverages produced adding caffeine. Energy drinks contain large amount of caffeine and most times labels on the drink do not give the actual amount of caffeine in them.
Companies that produce energy drinks lay claims that energy drinks can increase alertness and improve physical and mental performance. This only help prove that there is high amount of caffeine contained in energy drinks.
Minimize your intake of energy drinks because it contains large amount of caffeine.
P.S - It is confirmed not good to mix energy drinks with alcohol as it can be dangerous to the body.
Here are set of individuals who should refrain from taking caffeine ;
* Pregnant women, because caffeine can pass through the placenta to the baby.
* Breastfeeding mothers.
* Individuals having high blood pressure, ulcer, Insomnia, sleep disorders.
* Individuals having high or irregular heart rhythm.
* Individuals taking medicine.
* Teens as well as children.
