How to manage emphysema

Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that affect millions. This disease destroys the air sacs and reduces the lung capacity giving rise to the hallmark symptom of emphysema (shortness of breath).

Emphysema can limit one's ability perform certain activities. In our last post we exposed different ways  one can prevent developing emphysema but if it turns out that you already developed emphysema, that's no reason to panic.

Let's look at ways one can manage this disease and live much longer than expected ;

Limit your exposure to irritants

This is one among the pertinent steps one can take to prevent emphysema or slow the progression if you've already been diagnosed with the condition.

Irritants can be attributed to smoking, air pollution and manufacturing fumes. These subjects the lungs to long-term, detrimental effect and can progress the disease.

If you are addicted to tobacco, you can have more success in stopping smoking looking into prescribed cessation medications. You can also make other lifestyle changes that'll help break your mental addiction to smoking.

Be sure also to change your furnace and air conditioner filters frequently to help eradicate irritants in your home as well.

Maintain a healthy diet

A healthy diet keeps you healthy and help you maintain a healthy weight.

A healthy weight place less stress on the lungs as you breath and makes you less vulnerable to respiratory infection.

Many a victims living with emphysema have confirmed that diets with more monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrate make it easier to breath.

See a professional dietician before attempting to change your diet. He can help you make the right decision that'll suit your health.

Exercise regularly

Exercise can slow the deterioration of the lungs and increase your lung capacity.

Find a regular exercise routine that gets your heart rate up, you can try a cardio routine that includes walking, jogging, jumping rope or cycling and water aerobics.

You won't have to push yourself hard at the beginning since the exercise will make it hard for you to breath, but as time extends you can step up your game.

Drink enough water frequently

No doubt, drinking enough water can really be of great benefit to the health. Drinking plenty of water will help thin the mucus associated with emphysema, making it easier to remove.

Aim to drink a very good amount of water each day as this helps you manage your condition.

Try not to breath cold air

Frigid air can cause your bronchial passages to spasm increasing the difficulty to breath even further.

This may seem difficult especially if you live in areas with cold winters but placing a cold-air mask or a warm scarf over your mouth prior to exposing yourself to the cold weather can help warm the air as you inhale.

Join a support group

Emphysema is a serious condition that will affect your quality of life as it progresses. Maintaining your  emotional well being and keeping a positive outlook can be just as pertinent as maintaining your physical  health.

You can look online and locally also for support groups where you can meet others to discuss treatment options and coping strategies.

Outlined above are trusted ways one can manage emphysema and live much longer.
